My name is Mikiahya Greene, I’m in my early 20’s, I grew up in the Northern Kentucky/ Cincinnati area. I’m an athlete, an advocate, a speaker, a student, a sister, a friend, and a survivor of Domestic & Gun Violence. On June 22, 2023 (when I was 20 years old) I was shot and paralyzed in my home, while in a domestic violence relationship. I am now living my life wheelchair bound as a T4 SCI (Spinal Cord Injury) because of my injury. Following my injury I faced many challenges trying to learn to live my life and maneuver in a world that wasn’t designed to always include me.
Growing up I had always loved being active and being involved in sports. As a kid and young teen I had participated in sports like cheer, track & field, softball, volleyball, and much more. After becoming wheelchair bound I didn’t want to lose my love for adventure and being active. Luckily for me I was introduced to some amazing organizations that showed me the world of Adaptive Athletics. Because of this I’ve been able to participate in more adaptive sports than I can count. I’m currently a member of The University of Cincinnati’s Adaptive Athletics program, where I participate in track & field as a para-athlete.
I’ve also been able to do quite a bit of travel since my injury. About 6 months after my injury I went on my first cruise. It was a bit difficult learniing to travel as a wheelchair user, but also really exciting overcoming the challenges I ran into. Since my injury I've traveled to Mexico, Honduras, Jamaica, and a few different cities in the U.S. I've really grown to love traveling and experiencing different things in the world.
I've learned to look at my injury as an opportunity instead of a set back, and since then the world has been an amazing adventure. I want everyone to know that disabilities don't have to define us, and life is worth living after injury.
